Lychee
per lb · Litchi chinensis
Rosewater and white grape, almost perfumed. A short window from the tree, which is why it comes from a grower and not a warehouse abroad.

Ripen · keep · enjoy
- As it leaves us
- Tree-ripe; lychee does not ripen after picking. The shell is red to pinkish-red and cracks cleanly under your thumb; brown patches are the shell drying, not the fruit.
- At home
- In a sealed bag in the fridge for up to a week; on the counter the shell browns within a day or two.
- Enjoy by
- Within 5 days of delivery
Florida lychee comes in a short burst from mid-May to early July, mostly in June.

Good for
- Immune function and collagen — one of the richest fruits in vitamin C
- Copper — helps the body use iron
- Polyphenols in the flesh
Children should not make a meal of lychees on an empty stomach: natural compounds in the fruit, highest in unripe ones, can drop blood sugar sharply.
Keep them cold in a bag and eat within a few days; the shell browns quickly but the fruit inside is fine.
